Bob & Nancy Ulrich's Day Hiking Adventures with photos in Glacier National Park   Report # GP04
Momma Goat
Coming Through!
Join Bob & Nancy Ulrich as they hike all over Glacier National Park taking pictures.
The official word on Mountain goats is: "If you scan the sides of cliffs,
you may be lucky enough to see a mountain goat
". gp04ph01.jpg (12215 bytes)
I considered myself lucky when to my surprise I saw not one but two, way up on a cliff.
Better still, it was a mamma and baby goat. Time for some telephoto sh
ots.
Now you have to understand, I'm one to go along with the official word on most things.

I wasn't concerned in the least, when the mountain goats started to move down from the cliff onto a ridge. I thought it odd that they started heading down from the ridge. I then became surprised at how fast they were descending, and thought I better change to a non-telephoto lens. I figured they were headed for a group of trees between me and the ridge. Little did I know, they had other intentions.  Now here is where I must interject an addendum to the Official Word on Mountain Goats  - "While Mountain Goats may first be seen near cliffs far away, they most likely will not stay there. Goats move very fast, and are not afraid of people. They will tend to head to green spots with flowers. If you are between the goat and were they want to go, you better move quick,  as they will run you over!"

The next few shots were taken while jumping backwards
out of the way of the momma goat!

gp04ph03.jpg (14885 bytes) She came out
of the trees
right at me.
I had to
jump back
to avoid being
shiskabobed!
gp04ph04.jpg (19567 bytes)
Not a bad shot, considering I was jumping backwards at the time!
gp04ph05.jpg (11981 bytes) I was able to get my
balance after landing
quick enough to get a
shot of the baby.
Note the trail
in the bottom left
corner of the
shot where I
was standing.

As quickly as they came, they disappeared.

Armed with this new understanding
of Mountain Goat behavior,
I was ready for some serious
Mountain Goat photography.
I would find them high up, and
be ready to photograph them
when they came down,
careful not to be in their
line of travel.
