Avalanche Lake Trail  starts on the Trail of  the Cedars, south of  the footbridge. Trailhead parking is well marked,  and is located between  Lake Mc Donald Lodge  and the Loop. This is a very popular trail,  as it is a short hike and  only climbs 500 feet.  If you  are looking for solitude,  this is not the hike to take,  unless you go very early... View from the Far End of Avalanche Lake The Avalanche Lake Hike  is a 4 mile round trip. Add  another 1.6 miles round trip  if you go to the far side  of the lake as we did. Photographing  Lakes  in Glacier is  an exercise  in patience. One moment  the wind is kicking up  the water..
