Bob and Nancy Ulrich's Day Hiking Adventures with photos in the San Gorgonio Wilderness  Report   #SGW-01

Photos on the Fish Creek Trail
San Gorgonio Wilderness
San Bernadino National Forest, Near Big Bear in Southern California

Trail head elevation: 8180  /  Fish Creek elevation: 8600  /  Miles round trip: 3.4
Positives: Great starter hike. Lots of meadows and little streams.
Negative: Dirt road to trailhead, with a poorly marked sign on the dirt road.

This hike starts at a dirt parking lot trailhead off Highway 38. This trail head to this hike requires driving over 7 miles on a dirt road (approximate, it depends on how much weaving you have to do to avoid rocks and ruts). I recommend that you bring a truck, SUV or other high clearance vehicle, as the road did have some rough spots. I would avoid this hike if it looks like rain, or has rained in the past week, as you could get stuck in the mud.

Watch for the sign in this photo and turn right. We saw the sign, saw the left arrow and ended up on a unexpected detour! (We did find a great place to photograph wild flowers  We’re putting together a report on that side trip and will post it later.

Having said all that, this is a wonderful hike. There is a large dirt lot to park in at the trailhead. The majority of this hike is not to steep. It does go downhill for a bit before you get to a junction. Turn left at the junction. This hike gets you into really nice country fast. There are a number of meadows on the way, and one huge meadow before the switchbacks start. The wildflowers are in bloom, as evidenced by the photos.

The first part of the trail meanders through manzanita
Left: Big flowers by the meadow.

Bottom: A close up

Wild Flowers abound!
This is a great hike for hikers of all ages, as you can get to beautiful country with solitude in a short distance, quickly, without a lot of up hill by ending the hike early at the meadow located right before the switchbacks.
